Greetings from Dr. Jeremy Pierre

Welcome to 34300WW Biblical Counseling and Personal Ministry of the Word. My name is Dr. Jeremy Pierre, and I am grateful you’ve join us for this course.

My hope is to give you a theological vision for human experience, particularly for the troubles people face in life—troubles that you, no matter your specific role, are called by God to help them bear. So you’re either going to be more or less competent at understanding their troubles and offering guidance.

While I’ll be training you in some counseling practices, this course is really about a methodology for any form of personal discipleship where you are helping others think biblically about their suffering, their experience, their decisions, their relationships, and so much more.

So I hope you’re ready to think hard and be rewarded for your hard work with greater insight into yourself, into other people, and ultimately into what God is seeking to accomplish in the hearts of everyone through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Course Description

This course is a basic introduction to biblical counseling theory and techniques. Attention is focused on how the Scriptures and theology form the foundation and substance for biblical counseling.

Course Objectives:

By studying the materials presented in this course, listening to the lectures, and completing the assignments, students will be able to:

- Explain how Scripture provides a theological anthropology that makes ultimate sense out of human experience, including human trouble
- Articulate how the gospel of Jesus Christ is central to the transformation of the soul, and thus to personal ministry and counseling
- Articulate how this theological framework expresses itself in personal ministry of the Word to people in all sorts of contexts
- Explain how counseling is a ministry of the Word that fits within a congregational model for spiritual formation
- Apply Scripture to your own personal experience as well as the experience of the people who seek your advice for personal problems

Expectations of Students:

- Students are expected to check their SBTS email accounts at least twice a week throughout the term. This is necessary to stay up to date on pertinent class communication.
- Similarly, students are accountable for all information contained within the full Course Syllabus and Class Announcements.
