[MODULE 2] Adding Assessments (Quizzes or Surveys)

Image

Whether you call it a mid-term, exam, quiz, test, evaluation, survey --- Canvas creates all assessments using the 'quizzes' tool.

Different types of Quizzes

There are 2 different quiz 'types' in Canvas:

  • Quiz: Most common assessment. Questions will automatically be evaluated based on right or wrong answers.
  • Survey: Most common form of evaluation. Can be administered anonymously. Questions will not be evaluated based on right or wrong answers.

As always, quizzes and surveys can be graded or ungraded. Graded quizzes and surveys will be listed as 'assignments' and will have a column associated in the gradebook. Ungraded quizzes are considered practice quizzes.

Ways to Add Questions to a Quiz

Just remember, there are THREE (3) ways to add questions to a quiz (or survey).

  1. Build a question from scratch from the question tab.
  2. Copy a question from an existing question bank.
  3. Have questions randomly pulled from a question bank (i.e. "Select 10 questions at 1 point each from the Chapter 4 question bank).

REMEMBER:
After adding questions and setting options,
you must publish the quiz (or survey).
Otherwise students will not be able to access it.

Setting the Quiz Options

Once you've added the questions to a quiz (or survey), you'll have to decide on the quiz-related settings. How do you want to administer this assessment?

Below are the quiz specific settings:

  • Shuffle answers
  • Time limit
  • Multiple attempts
  • Let students see their quiz responses
  • Show which answers were correct
  • Restrict this quiz (by password, by IP address, Respondus Lockdown Browser*)
  • Show one question at a time

*NOTE: This option would only appear if your campus uses Respondus Lockdown Browser.
