[MODULE 1] Creating new content within a course
Course Import tool and Files allow instructors to import external content. However, teachers can also create content within their course through PAGES using the Rich Content Editor.
Adding Pages in Canvas
If you want to build content and education resources WITHIN your course (rather than importing external content), then PAGES is the way to go. Pages are where you can include text, video, and links to your files. You can even make links to other pages.
Canvas keeps the entire history of the page so you can see how it changes over time. By default, only teachers can edit pages. But you can always override these settings by allowing students and other participants enrolled in your class to edit specific pages.
For instance, all the information you are reading right now has been designed using the Pages tool. In fact, there are many uses for pages, such as:
- Using pages as a way to deliver content (similar to the pages in this course)
- Using pages as the course landing page (i.e. Front Page)
- Using pages for course navigation (in conjunction with or in place of the course navigation menu)
- Using pages to organize unit materials or lesson overview
- Using pages for 'answer keys' (then hiding the pages from student view)
- Using pages for a wiki, allowing students to contribute content to a page
- Example: Things You Can Do With Pages
As you see, there can be many applications in leveraging the PAGE tool in your course.
Like FILES, you can hide/show PAGES.
Adding Content Using Rich Content Editor (RCE)
As instructors, we want our courses to be dynamic and rich with content --- not just text, but rich media, videos, and more!
Canvas has a simple, yet powerful, word processor that is available anytime for creating new content. Whether you are building pages or activities (such as assignments, discussions, quizzes, etc.), anytime there is the option to add content to your course, the Rich Content Editor (RCE) will be available.
Just how can you use the RCE? Oh, let us count the ways...
- Bold, italicize, underline, color or highlight text
- Clear formatted text
- Align text right, center, left
- Indent text
- Bullet or number text
- Add tables
- Hyperlink text
- Embed images
- Leverage the equation editor
- Embed or upload media (audio and/or video)
- Format font size
